BRAND SPOTLIGHT: JOANA MOTA CAPITÃO JEWELLERY

For those of you who don't know, I've worked with Joana Mota Capitão for a handful of years now. We've became friends. We help each other. We both know we're there. So it wasn't hard to think about a brand that I admire and follow closely that's growing and leaving her lovely mark in the world.

The brand itself, Joana Mota Capitão Jewellery, was born in 2012, after a course at Ar.Co - Visual Communication and Art Centre, in Lisbon, an internship at Marc Monzó and Estela Guitart's studios, in Barcelona, and a stint as Valentim Quaresma's studio assistant, a renowned Portuguese designer and jeweller — all of these ventures had a vital role in Joana's decision and ever-growing love for creating her own designs and thrive as such.

After a number of successful collections — most of which are still being sold today and sought by customers all over the globe — she's just launched LUZ, a bold new collection that tells a love story. Here's what she has to say about it:

Tender and teeming with floral, organic lines, LUZ shows us the romantic character of a love story. This story is just like every other story, surely, but still unique and a candid exception for the rest of the world. LUZ is made of stories and memories, mental keepsakes forever in a drawer that were left until the right moment to recapture them came. It's the odd-shaped iron hardware that grace LUZ and that turn into the ultimate inspiration for strong yet plain pieces, heavy on feelings, and lusty silhouettes.

LUZ was inspired by one of her grandmothers, collector extraordinaire of all things amazing. Not only did she grow up surrounded by awesome, mysterious objects, she recently found a couple of items in her grandma's basement that served the purpose of swaying her into creating this collection.

Joana Mota Capitão Jewellery proves again she's a Portuguese brand to be reckon with and that's a lot more to come. We'll be here waiting for it, don't you worry about it.
